Join the Aussie Backyard Bird Count
Published on 17 October 2019
Council is encouraging Sunraysia bird-lovers to join tens of thousands of like-minded people across the country in this month’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count.
This national event is not only a chance for the community to connect and gain a greater appreciation of the birdlife in their region, but help contribute to a national birdlife database.
To be held on Sunday 27 October, the Aussie Backyard Bird Count involves residents counting birds in their ‘backyard’, which can literally mean their backyard, but can be anywhere in the region, including local parks, streets, bushland or riverfront areas.
Participants can count as many times as they like, but each count must be over a 20-minute period.
Council will hold its own bird count event at the Mildura riverfront, opposite the Water Play Park, which residents are encouraged to take part in.
The event will run from 9am to 2pm, with prizes on offer for participants.
This is the second time Council has taken part in the national event.
Last year, 120 Sunraysia residents participated in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count.
They observed 7035 individual birds across 121 different species.
Nationally, 76,918 nature-loving Australians took time out to count more than 2,751,100 birds.
Councillor for Environment and Farming Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said Council was encouraging more Sunraysia residents to take part in the event this year.
“This is a great opportunity for residents to get in touch with nature while learning about birds in a simple and fun way,” Cr Cirillo said.
“Residents can gain a greater understanding about the birds we share our backyards and public spaces with and meet like-minded people along the way.”
Data collected during the Aussie Backyard Bird Count assists Birdlife Australia in understanding more about birds that live in populated areas.
