Mildura Rural City Council has unveiled design concepts for a major redevelopment of the Lake Cullulleraine foreshore at Johansen Memorial Recreation Reserve.

Plans for the $195,000 project include new paths, lighting, seating and picnic benches, upgrades to the existing rotunda and a new barbecue area. The rotunda roof will be raised, making room to install tourist and history signage.

The highlight of the project will be a nature-based play space inspired by the local landscape and heritage. It will include swings, slides, climbing nets/ropes, rocks, timber and tyres and recycled materials donated by the community.

Millewa resident Cr Ian Arney said the project design was the result of Council working side-by-side with local residents from the project’s inception.

“Council has worked closely with Millewa residents on this project right from the start, as no one knows this community better than the people who call it home,” Cr Arney said.

“The community’s enthusiasm, input and ideas for this project is what will make it a success.

”Funded through the Australian Government’s Drought Communities Program, this redevelopment will improve public amenities for locals to enjoy and help to attract more visitors to the region.

“Lake Cullulleraine is the jewel of the Millewa and already a popular tourist destination. These improvements to the foreshore will help boost the local economy as it continues to recover from the recent drought.

“There will also be economic benefits during the construction phase with opportunities for local contractors to be involved.”

Work on this exciting project will get underway later this year.
