A week long community-driven makeover of Mildura’s Langtree Mall will get underway next week.

Volunteers keen to inject energy in to Mildura’s central retail precinct will join forces as part of the 7 Day Makeover, led by placemaking expert David Engwicht from Creative Communities.

Planning for the makeover has been underway for several months, with residents from all walks of life invited to be part of an innovative initiative that will use $5,000 and the power of people to transform the Langtree Mall.

Mayor Glenn Milne said excitement and anticipation was building as the makeover week approached.

“This is something we have never done before and it’s really pleasing that the community has embraced the idea and is keen to be involved,” Cr Milne said.

Next week’s Langtree Mall 7 Day Makeover will involve two days of training on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 June where volunteers will learn the art of making great public spaces, followed by a public planning session on Tuesday evening.  David Engwicht says the planning session is open to anyone, not just those who participate in the training.

“The planning evening is a very crucial time because that is where all the ideas and resources we have available for the makeover will be canvassed and discussed. It’s when the community will decide what and how exactly they want to makeover the Mall and determine the best way to achieve this.” David said.

Several working groups will also be established at the planning session, each with a specific role to play during the makeover.

“The great thing about this process is that people can choose the level of involvement they have. They can choose when and how long they would like to volunteer for.  The more input the better!”

After Tuesday evening’s planning session the working groups and volunteers will spend the following days preparing for the makeover itself, which will take place on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June.  A 7 Day Makeover headquarters will be set up in the former Camera House store, located at 54A Langtree Mall from Wednesday 3 June.

There is still time for people to be involved in the 7 Day Makeover and David said donations to the Resources Bank and Skills Register would be welcomed up until the physical makeover got underway on Saturday.

“So far we have had some great items including an antique fridge, pavers, old farm machinery, building materials, rope and sculptures donated. We don’t necessarily have to use everything in the Resources Bank, but if we have a diverse range of items to choose from we will have wider scope for the makeover.”
