Latest results of Council’s environmental sustainability measures

Mildura Rural City Council cut both its water and electricity consumption over the past 12 months according to the latest Environmental Sustainability Report.

The Environmental Sustainability Report 2019-20 provides information on Council’s progress towards a range of sustainability targets, as well as demonstrating the organisation’s commitment to manage the region’s environment and natural areas responsibly.

It focuses on areas including electricity, fleet, water, biodiversity, waste, community education and engagement.

Key points over the past financial year include a five per cent decrease in electricity consumption, a seven per cent decrease in water consumption, and a five per cent increase in fuel usage.

COVID-19 restrictions have impacted the latter period of the report due to a combination of factors including less staff using Council offices, but increased usage of vehicles due to social distancing requirements.

The preparation of Council’s kerbside food and garden organics service was a key outcome, producing results that will be reported on in the 2020-21 Environmental Sustainability Report.

Community engagement and education are other components of Council’s environmental sustainability program, ensuring the broader community has information and opportunities to do their part for the environment.

Council’s involvement and promotion of the annual Aussie Backyard Bird Count and Clean Up Australia Day, as well as regular activities at the Mildura Eco Village, are examples of initiatives that improve residents’ ability to value and care for the environment.
