Learn more about our climate from Bureau of Meteorology scientist
Published on 31 May 2017
Whether it’s farmers, business owners or home owners, our community is heavily reliant, and sometimes highly vulnerable, to climatic conditions.
In a bid to provide a greater understanding of these climatic conditions, including historical and future weather patterns in our region, the Bureau of Meteorology will conduct a free community presentation next Thursday, 8 June, in Mildura.
To be held at the Mildura Eco Village Education Centre, the presentation by Bureau of Meteorology Senior Research Scientist Dr Blair Trewin will be of particular benefit to farmers, who will be able to ask questions about existing and future weather patterns, including the likelihood of significant weather events.
Mildura Rural City Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo, who like other growers in the region is reliant on the weather for his livelihood, urged residents to take advantage of Dr Trewin’s visit next week.
“For horticulturists, dryland farmers, businesses, or even people holding major events outdoors – the weather can have a massive impact,” Cr Cirillo said.
“Last November’s major storm event is a prime example and impacted on all sectors of our community, particularly our farmers, many of which will take years to recover.
“Next week’s presentation by Dr Trewin will not only provide a snapshot of our area’s historical weather patterns, but a valuable insight into the likelihood of similar events to November’s devastating storm, or possible future droughts, occurring in the future and how to plan for them.”
Next Thursday’s presentation at the Mildura Eco Village Education Centre will run from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
