Local dancers to join Expressions Dance Company on stage for Mildura

Mildura Arts Centre and Expressions Dance Company (EDC) invites you to spend the night with the wicked seductress of the stage when it brings Natalie Weir’s Carmen Sweet to Mildura on Saturday 3 October.
Hot on the heels of its 10th Helpmann Award nomination, EDC is touring its smouldering contemporary dance interpretation of this legendary story to venues across Australia.
Performed to Shchedrin’s gripping score Carmen Suite, this iconic tale of Spanish heat and gypsy passion unravels when naïve soldier Don Jose has his heart ignited by the fiery Carmen.
EDC Artistic Director Natalie Weir said she is thrilled to be sharing one of the company’s most loved productions with audiences across Australia.
“It’s such a fiery story of passion and revenge and audiences quickly find themselves engulfed in it,” she said.
“The Carmen story has all the elements for great dance: passion, love, revenge, jealousy, betrayal and even murder.”
“Paired with Shchedrin’s gripping music, his best-known composition, the production charges at a hypnotic rate.”
Arts and Culture Portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said the performance would likely resonate with Mildura’s large dance fraternity and encouraged locals to embrace the opportunity to see EDC perform.
“Dance has been a popular art form in Mildura for years and we have some incredibly talented dancers in our ranks,” Cr Joslyn said.
“Some of them will be lucky enough to join the stage with EDC for this performance which is very exciting.”
In the lead up to its regional tour of Natalie Weir’s Carmen Sweet, EDC has travelled to participating venues to audition young dancers for the fantastic opportunity to perform with EDC onstage during the performance. In each case, 10 young dancers have been selected to perform.
“We feel fortunate to share our productions with audiences from regional and remote areas, so it’s an incredible bonus that we’ve been able to select some amazing young dancers to join the stage with us in their home towns.”
Carmen Sweet has quickly become one of Weir’s most loved productions following previous seasons across Queensland and at Singapore Dance Theatre’s prestigious Ballet Under the Stars event.
Carmen Sweet is produced by Expressions Dance Company and Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
It will show at 7:30pm on Saturday 3 October at Mildura Arts Centre.
