Local exhibitions take centre stage

Published on 15 December 2015

Two very special local exhibitions will open this Friday at Mildura Arts Centre.

Behind My Eyes and The Grace Equation feature works from local artists, and the exhibition openings will coincide with this month’s Twilight event.

Arts and Culture Portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn praised the Behind My Eyes exhibition which features work from Sunraysia Residential Services' Benetook Farm participants.

Benetook Farm is a local disability training and respite project which provides a space for people with disabilities to participate in activities that allow them to make new friends, learn new skills and develop self-confidence. The arts program forms part of this project and provides a real opportunity for the participants to engage in the wider community.

“This is an amazing initiative by Sunraysia Residential Services (SRS) Inc. and is helping to break down barriers in our community and helps people with disabilities express themselves through art.

“This important exhibition explores the imagery and imagination of the minds of some of society’s most vulnerable people,” Cr Joslyn said.

The second exhibition opening on Friday, The Grace Equation by local artist Sarah Curtis, explores the notions of attitude and equality, contrasted with grace.

It follows a narrative progress from the “good” intentions of humanity to the biblical notions of grace and equality. The work takes inspiration from the Christian classic written by John Bunyan named ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’, from New Zealand artist Colin McCahon and American pop artist Jim Dine, who is known for his practice of painting, drawing, sculpture and print making.

“We’re very proud to be showcasing local artists at the moment at MAC,” Cr Joslyn said.  “There is an incredible wealth of talent here locally and it is important that we support our all our artists.”

Both exhibitions open officially at 6pm on Friday 18 December and will form part of Twilight at Mildura Arts Centre, which is on from 5pm to 8:30pm on Friday 18 December.

Twilight is a free event with live music on the lawns, access to galleries and Rio Vista Historic House and activities to entertain kids. Drinks and snacks including antipasto platters are available from the café (No BYO alcohol).
