Madden Avenue set for major road works between Ninth and Tenth Streets

One of Mildura’s busiest CBD streets will undergo major reconstruction works from next month.

Mildura Rural City Council will resurface about 300 metres of Madden Avenue between Ninth and Tenth Streets, with the works expected to start on 9 January and take five months to complete.

As part of the works, roundabouts will be installed at both intersections, while road works will include new kerb and channelling, replacement of damaged stormwater drainage, construction of new road base, stabilisation works, asphalt surfacing and line marking.

New lighting and palm trees will also be installed at the roundabouts.

The works will be undertaken in two stages – the Ninth Street roundabout and nearby street construction in the first stage followed by the Tenth Street roundabout and remaining street construction.

Madden Avenue will remain open to traffic for the majority of the works however parking within the work area will be limited.

There will be times when critical works are being undertaken which will require the closure of Madden Avenue, however this will only be for limited periods.

Road closure times will be communicated to the public well in advance and traffic management will be in place alerting motorists to changed traffic conditions. Drivers are urged to be patient and adhere to road signage.

Council will spend about $1.6million from its Federal Government Roads to Recovery allocation to undertake the works.

Infrastructure and Transport Portfolio Councillor Greg Brown said about 4000 vehicles used this section of Madden Avenue each day, making it one of Mildura’s busiest streets.

“These numbers illustrate the importance of ensuring this road, which is currently in very poor condition, is given the attention it deserves,” Cr Brown said.

“Over time, all roads deteriorate, particularly those that are used as frequently as Madden Avenue.

“The construction of the two roundabouts meanwhile will be welcomed and provide a significant boost to safety for road users.”

Lower Murray Water (LMW) will also undertake water main replacement works during January.

LMW’s Manager Engineering Brian Smith said coinciding the authority’s works with Council’s program was aimed at minimising disruption to motorists and residents in the area.

“We are upgrading the water main and installing new PSP pipe along with other associated works,” Mr Smith said.
