Mayor appointed to State Government advisory panel

Mildura Rural City Council’s Mayor Glenn Milne is one of twelve Victorian Mayors to be appointed to the State Government’s 2016 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel.

Appointed by the Hon. Natalie Hutchins, Minister for Local Government, Aboriginal Affairs and Industrial Relations, the LGMAP provide advice on legislative, regulatory, strategic and policy decisions to the government, giving an insight into how decisions might impact at a local level.

Cr Milne said he is very happy to accept the appointment and is looking forward to having the opportunity to advocate directly for our region.

“It is a great honour to be selected to join the LGMAP and I’ll certainly be flying the flag for rural and regional Councils,” Cr Milne said.

“I know last year the LGMAP were involved in discussions around rate capping and the review of the Local Government Act 1989 and I’m sure these will continue to be hot topics in the coming months.”

Mildura Rural City Council CEO Gerard José congratulated Cr Milne on his appointment and said it is testament to Council’s ongoing strong relationship with the State Government and leadership across a variety of issues.

“Our Council has worked extremely hard to keep regional issues in the forefront of decision maker’s minds, with our Councillors showing leadership on issues that transcend any one community,” Mr José said.

“Bridging the gap between the First Peoples and non-Aboriginal Australians, opening up community discussion on domestic violence and drug issues and working in close partnerships to see good outcomes for our youth and young people, are just a few examples of where our Council is leading the way.”

Cr Milne joins a group of Mayors from metropolitan, regional and rural councils, with the group meeting a number of times between now the October Local Government elections.
