Melbourne Theatre Company’s (MTC) world premiere production Melbourne Talam will commence at Mildura Arts Centre on Tuesday, 23 May before it goes on to play at five other leading regional performing arts venues in Victoria and Launceston College in Tasmania.

This new production by Rashma N. Kalsie explores the notion of belonging, told through the stories of three young people from India trying to make Melbourne their home.

It is vibrant and fast-paced theatre, energised with Melbourne’s urban intensity and cultural diversity to put Australia’s contemporary social issues centre stage.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said Melbourne Talam was an ideal fit for Mildura due to the region’s amazing cultural diversity.

“It’s fantastic to see Mildura Arts Centre building on its partnership with Melbourne Theatre Company,” Cr Modica said.

“This results in relevant and high quality theatre productions and education programs being accessible to young people in Mildura.”

Cr Modica said the MTC casting team would also hold general auditions at the venue, providing genuine opportunities for local actors to develop their careers with a leading Australian theatre company.

Melbourne Talam has been nurtured through various MTC play development programs and developed for the 2017 Education tour.

MTC’s tour program features free pre-show talks and post-show Q&As for school groups, and the opportunity for students to participate in free creative workshops that will focus on the themes, ideas and non-naturalistic performance style of the production.

Directed by Petra Kalive, Melbourne Talam is MTC’s 2017 Education Production and embodies MTC’s commitment to programming theatre that speaks directly to today’s young audiences.

Melbourne Talam is on the 2017 VCE Drama Playlist and will have a three-week season at MTC’s Southbank Theatre prior to commencing its regional tour.  It’s suitable for both school and general audiences.
