Designs and raceway plans for the proposed Mildura Motorsports Precinct have taken a step forward with Mildura Rural City Council having a preliminary workshop with two key motorsports bodies and racing personalities.

Peter Doyle, Acting CEO of Motorcycling Australia and Bruce Keyes, Manager of Track & Safety from the Confederation of Australian Motorsports (CAMS) were in Mildura on Friday 22 July to help discuss potential track designs and the layout of the proposed site at Koorlong.

Mayor Glenn Milne said the meeting with Council staff working on the project had been very productive and was a great step forward.

“The business case is still being finalised and these meetings will help us to scope Stage 1 of the development and begin clarifying what infrastructure will be needed from the outset,” Cr Milne explained.

Stage 1 will include the bitumen raceway, skidpan and associated infrastructure.  Engineering drawings for the raceway and skidpan will form a major milestone in the development of the final business case and development plans for the Mildura Motorsports Precinct.

The workshop meeting included a site visit, studies of the topographical maps and meetings with international motorcyclist Josh Waters and local car racer Anthony Koch.

“It’s not just about building a bitumen raceway and skidpan – it’s about developing an area that will rival any in our state and making sure the precinct will be self-sustainable in the long term.”

Early planning, benchmarking and feasibility studies have indicated that motorsports inject around $21.4million dollars each year into the local economy and with the right infrastructure, this could increase to over $61.7million in the coming years.

“As we’ve always indicated, the success of this project will require some form of private investment and having input from the very best people in Australia on the design will add weight to our business plan and hopefully show potential investors that we’re serious about the future of this project.”

The draft business plan is due to go out for community consultation in October.
