Council’s Youth Services team has created a new program aimed at helping young people in our region develop leadership skills and talents which will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

Applications are now open for the 2020 Mildura Rural City Council Youth Leadership Program, targeting young people aged 16 to 25.

The six-month program provides a raft of personal and professional development opportunities for young people, helping to develop skills including communication, public speaking and conflict resolution.

As part of the initiative, participants will use skills learnt through a series of monthly workshops and other activities to develop and deliver youth-led projects.

These monthly workshops will be delivered on Saturdays, while other meetings will be held after 5pm.

The program will run from April to November, culminating in a presentation by participants to Council and a graduation dinner at the end of the year.

Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Gavin Sedgmen said participants would develop an increased awareness of local services and challenges facing our community through visits to key local agencies and listening to guest speakers.

Cr Sedgmen said the Youth Leadership program is aimed at equipping young people with skills that will help them for decades to come.

“Through the course of this six-month initiative, participants will learn to identify their strengths as well as develop skills and attributes such as stress management, leadership and resilience, which will aid them in their future education and career paths,” he said.

“From a community and Council perspective, this program will help identify issues relevant and important to young people, as well as help guide Council’s Youth Engagement Strategy.”
