New economic development and tourism body to drive Mildura forward
Published on 14 December 2016
TWO of the Mildura region’s major drivers, economic development and tourism, are about to converge into a single new entity, ensuring the future growth and prosperity of the region.
The functions of the successful Mildura Tourism (MT) and Mildura Development Corporation (MDC) bodies are set to be combined into the one entity, providing a raft of benefits for the region.
Aimed at creating an Australian best practice tourism and economic development model, the transition to the new body is being guided by experienced external facilitator Neil Noelker.
A transition team, comprising two representatives each from MT, MDC and Mildura Rural City Council, has already been working together ahead of a search for directors for the inaugural skills based board.
Once board positions have been filled, a chief executive officer will be appointed with the aim of having the new entity operational by early 2017.
The new body will be charged with promoting the Mildura region as a place of choice to invest, visit and live.
"It is anticipated that new directors on the board will be aspirational for the economic growth of our region and bring a range of skills and experience to enable an innovative business culture and drive the investment capacity of the Mildura region in a range of industries,” MDC chair Jenny Grigg said.
It will also play a pivotal role in the Mildura region’s future, guiding tourism and economic development, and therefore shaping the cultural, environmental and social future of the district.
“The board of Mildura Tourism firmly believes this new, best practices body will serve Mildura in a more professional and responsible way,” Mildura Tourism president Paul Gibbens said.
“The support of MRCC in joining with MDC and MT in forming this new entity has been critical to its successful formation.
“We see exciting times ahead with the new organisation able to grow Mildura, ensuring potential developers and tourists know Mildura is open for business.”
The decision to combine the roles of MT and MDC under the one banner was approved by Mildura Rural City Councillors at last year’s October Ordinary Council Meeting.
In a similar arrangement to MT and MDC, the new organisation’s funding and reporting will be facilitated by MRCC, with the aim of a close strategic alliance between both organisations.
