New exhibitions to unveil untold stories

Mildura Arts Centre will officially launch two exhibitions, Behind the Wire and Invisible Visible this week.
Behind the Wire is an exhibition about Vietnam veterans, their jobs and their experiences, in their words. Photographer Susan Gordon-Brown spent three years photographing and interviewing Vietnam veterans from across Australia, asking them about their training prior to Vietnam, daily tasks on tour and life since their return home.
General Manager Community, Martin Hawson said the exhibition includes National Servicemen and regulars, soldiers, sailors, airmen and nurses of many different ranks and roles, including cooks, dental assistants, truck and tank drivers, forward scouts, riflemen, Australian Army Training Team members, civilian nurses and more.
“In this exhibition Susan explores the day-to-day life and experiences of the veteran’s and documents how they settled back into their everyday lives on their return to Australia,” he said.
Susan is an acclaimed Australian photographer who documents important Australian issues and topics, ranging from portraits of intrepid Australian tradies in Antarctica, to drought ravaged landscapes. Susan has a talent for portraits that show the true person, as her subjects immediately relax in her company.
Susan will also present a documentary and talk alongside Lachlan Wilson with Echoes of Conflict, reflections of the Vietnam War, on Saturday 12 November 2016 at 10am.
In Invisible Visible, Rosina Byrne endeavours to bring forward the struggle of women who experience the constrictions of darkness and silent identities throughout their lives. The oppression of the female has pushed Rosina forward with a strong desire to produce a body of work conveying the reigning control placed on the ‘female’.
Rosina Byrne is a Mildura based artist born to Italian migrant parents. Raised on a grape fruit block on the outskirts of Euston, New South Wales, Rosina works predominantly with photography, video and installation. She has exhibited widely, in solo and group exhibitions, including Palimpsest #9 and #10, Wallflower Photomedia Gallery, Centre for Contemporary Photography and Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne.
The exhibitions will be opened on Thursday 10 November at 6pm.
