New facility at Mildura Landfill

Safely dispose of potentially hazardous household materials, for free
Sunraysia residents can now safely dispose of household paint, batteries and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) thanks to a free new facility operating at the Mildura Landfill.
The Household Chemical Collection Program permanent drop-off site opened on Monday 22 June. It provides householders with a safe and convenient service that can be accessed throughout the year to dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals.
The drop-off site operates the same as the existing Transfer Station at Mildura Landfill. There are separate, clearly labelled bins set up for people to dispose of all household, batteries, paint and light bulbs. If visiting the Landfill site for the first time, people should drive over the weigh bridge and staff will direct them to the right spot.
The products collected through the Household Chemical Collection Program are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.
Environmental Sustainability Councillor Judi Harris said that while the dangers associated with improper disposal of household paint, batteries and CFLs cannot always be seen straight away; these products can pollute the environment for future generations, as well as harm their health.
“Household paint, batteries and CFLs can harm your children, your pets and the environment. Please do not pour paint down the drain or put these products out with your regular rubbish collection,” Cr Harris said.
The new Mildura facility is one of a network of permanent drop-off sites, which the Victorian Government has expanded from 12 to up to 30 across the state to improve access for all Victorian householders.
Cr Harris encouraged householders to take advantage of the free service to safely dispose of paint and other potentially hazardous products without harming human health or the environment.
“The good news is you can reduce hazards in your home and protect the environment by disposing of these products safely and easily throughout the year at the Mildura permanent drop-off site.”
Permanent drop-off sites are free services for all Victorian householders, administered by Sustainability Victoria in collaboration with local councils and are funded by the Victorian landfill levy. For more information visit sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxyourhome
