New kerbside glass bin service off to great start

The region’s new 120-litre, purple-lidded kerbside glass collection service is off to an incredible start, with more than 5.2 tonnes collected in the first week alone.

Officially getting underway from 1 July 2024, the new service has been introduced to comply with Victorian Government legislation, which will see all Victorian councils required to provide a standard, four-stream waste and recycling system by 2030.

Councillor for Environmental and Sustainability Jason Modica thanked the community for embracing the new service, which is seeing precious glass materials collected so it can be transformed into new and useful items.

“The introduction of the new kerbside glass service is already proving to be a big win for our community,” Cr Modica said.

“Our community has embraced the new stream, and really getting behind the push to transform this previous glass material into new products.

“Since the purple bin was delivered to eligible properties in April 2024, we’ve seen a 34 per cent reduction in the volume of waste being collected through households’ yellow recycling bin.

“This is based on people already embracing and using their new glass bin even before the start of collections.

“This is a fantastic outcome for our community, as it is not only freeing up glass waste to be transformed, but also saving our community money on the costs associated with processing recycled waste.”

Cr Modica encouraged the community to keep doing their bit to sort their waste correctly.

“Whether it’s food and organic waste, glass or other recyclable materials, our new four-bin system provides an easy and convenient way to dispose of waste in the right way,” Cr Modica said.

“The service is also limiting the amount of waste we are sending to landfill, and ensuring more waste is being reused as compost, other materials and even as a road base in the case of glass,” Cr Modica said.

“Eligible items for the new glass bin include glass jars and bottles, including broken glass,” Cr Modica said.

“Lids, however, must be disposed through either your yellow recycling bin (metal lids) and red landfill bin (plastic lids).”
