Nominations now open for prestigious local arts award
Published on 22 September 2015
Mildura Arts and Culture Advisory Committee are seeking nominations for the annual Elliott Award, recognising outstanding contributions to the arts in our region.
The Elliott Award was established in 2006 and recognises a person who has made a real difference to the arts locally and particularly focuses on previously unsung contributors. It is named after Senator R.D. Elliott, owner of the Elliott Newspaper Group and who bequeathed the founding art collection to Mildura Rural City Council.
Past recipients of the Award have been acknowledged for a wide range of reasons. From their length of service to the arts, the breadth of their contribution during their involvement in the arts, the encouragement and nurturing of children and youth in arts practice, the championing of arts involvement to the broader community, and the creation of a significant positive community legacy to the development of the arts in our region, all the past recipients have been dedicated to Arts and Culture in our region.
Arts and Culture portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said the Elliott Award is committed to acknowledging the passion and commitment of local arts and culture advocates.
“Within our community there are those whose dedication and contributions to arts and culture often goes unrecognised,” Cr Joslyn said. “The Elliott Award is an opportunity for the community to say thanks to these people and to show them how much their work is appreciated.”
Last year, two recipients jointly received the award for their contribution to dance in our region. Peta-Lynne Buchanan and Janine Kerr were recognised for their outstanding commitment to and passion for teaching dance to generations of dancers and performers.
The Elliott Award will be selected by Mildura Arts and Culture Advisory Committee and awarded and announced later this year.
