Ouyen pool closure

Published on 17 March 2016

Statement from Ray Lyons, Manager Leisure and Cultural Services

As many people would be aware, Ouyen pool was closed on Friday 4 March 2016 following a second non-compliant water test result for the facility.

The non-compliance related specifically to the microbiological testing which indicated the water quality of the pool was not within parameters set out by the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009.

Unfortunately, the results of the last series of microbiological water testing have shown the water quality in the pool is still not within the acceptable parameters and as such, the pool will not be reopening this season (2015/2016 season).

When the issue was originally identified, Council immediately began the prescribed water treatment program as set out in the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009, as well as completing a full check of all the plant and equipment.

While we have worked closely with the Environmental Health team and a number of aquatic industry specialists, as yet we have not been able to pinpoint the source of the bacteria which is causing the contamination.

We have also investigated a number of other options, including emptying the pool and starting from scratch, however all options still require we follow a strict sampling and water testing schedule which will take almost two weeks to complete and, as the pool season officially ends on 31 March, we have made the decision not to reopen again this season.

We regret the inconvenience the pool closure has caused and will be contacting our regular user groups directly in this regard.

In regards to residents with Ouyen Pool seasons passes, we can advise that their memberships will be accepted at any of the other pools within our municipality until 31 March 2016.  Seasons pass holders will need to have their pass with them to take advantage of this offer.

We trust patrons appreciate our need to ensure public safety and thank the community for their continued support of this much loved facility.  We also encourage anyone with further questions to please contact Council’s Community Recreation Officer on (03) 5018 8100.
