Peddling into Mildura Arts Centre
Published on 26 April 2016
After a two week season at Melbourne Theatre Company’s Southbank Theatre, the acclaimed production Peddling is heading to Mildura Arts Centre on Tuesday 10 May.
A key component of Mildura Art Centres (MAC) programming is to create unique opportunities for audiences to see award winning productions in their own community. This new collaboration builds on the local community engagement, as well as supporting the Melbourne Theatre Company’s (MTC) Sharing the Light initiative.
Arts and Culture Portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said MAC is focused on creating opportunities for young people to engage and participate in the arts.
“It’s fantastic Mildura Arts Centre is collaborating with different organisations such Melbourne Recital Centre and Victorian Opera, and of course Melbourne Theatre Company to bring fantastic productions to Mildura,” Cr Joslyn said.
“MTC’s Sharing the Light initiative allows more schools, students and audiences in regional areas to engage with MTC and access its award-winning productions, Education Program and enrichment workshops.
“Many of these external organisations offer access to their actors, directors and producers in the form of free workshops or a free talks. Not only does this give the audiences more insight into the productions, it also helps the students in the audience with their studies by providing different education opportunities.”
Peddling is suitable for audiences aged 15 + and although its directed at schools, it is also particularly relevant to people who work with young people or anyone who enjoys the experience of seeing something new and relevant to today’s societal issues.
Directed by Susie Dee and starring Darcy Brown, Peddling is a compelling urban story told in a lyrical free-form snap-rap with a live percussionist, about kids who get knocked down early and never get a hand up. It is a powerful one-person play by Harry Potter film star Harry Melling and centres around an unnamed, disaffected teenager trying to make sense of his place in the world, his troubled past and his uncertain future.
Peddling is on the 2016 VCE Drama Playlist and is open to general and educational audiences. Tickets are only $10.
