Power and water cuts headline Environmental Sustainability Report
Published on 25 October 2017
A significant reduction in electricity and water usage over the past 12 months are among the key findings outlined in Council’s Environmental Sustainability Report 2016/2017.
The annual report outlines and demonstrates Council’s commitment to managing our environment and natural areas sustainably across five key areas:
- electricity
- fleet
- water biodiversity
- waste
- community engagement
Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said major reductions in electricity usage over the past 12 months were the result of projects at several larger sites, including the installation of solar photovoltaic panels.
“We also cut our water consumption significantly, though this was due in part to the amount of rain our region received between October and December last year, which reduced our irrigation requirements,” Cr Cirillo said.
“Other areas where we managed to make gains were in our fleet of Council vehicles, where we saw a decrease in fuel consumption due to the ongoing focus on fuel efficiencies and route planning.
“While our annual report is important to set targets and track our progress in environmental sustainability, it also serves an important role in setting an example for others to follow in the community, showing what can be achieved.
“By doing this, I hope we can help raise awareness about the technologies and strategies available to help increase environmental sustainability.”
