Putting the call out to our future leaders
Published on 16 November 2016
If you’re in Year 10 next year and live, work or study in the municipality, Mildura Rural City Council wants to hear from you.
Council is now calling for nominations for its Youth Action Committee, which provides a host of unique opportunities for young people in the region.
Committee members meet regularly to help organise youth events as well as take part in leadership forums and self-development activities.
In turn, Council provides young people involved in the committee with an opportunity to develop their leadership skills, learn how local government works and both meet and provide a voice for young people in the community.
“Being a Youth Action Committee member this year has provided me with numerous special opportunities I wouldn’t have otherwise had,” Red Cliffs Secondary College student and current Youth Action Committee member Tiana Steward said.
“For example, working closely with members higher up in the community, delivering a project to a Council Meeting, helping out and enjoying myself at local events such as the Community Sleep Out, meeting other like-minded teens, being a link between school and the broader community, and most importantly, being a voice for our youth.
“I definitely recommend this position to any young person looking to be a leader, enhance confidence skills and those that have a passion for making a difference.”
Council’s Youth Engagement Services Coordinator Gary Green said becoming a Youth Action Committee member would not only be rewarding for participants but help develop the region’s younger generation into future leaders.
“Our youth are our future and by participating in this fantastic program, young people can get a taste for local government as well as what it takes to be a community leader,” Mr Green said.
To apply, nominees must be in Year 10 as of 1 January 2017 and either live, work or study in the Mildura Rural City Council municipality.
More information, including terms of reference and application forms, can be found on Council’s website at http://www.mildura.vic.gov.au/Services/Youth/Youth-Action-Committee.
Nominees must complete and submit their application forms to Mildura Rural City Council Youth Services by 5pm on 2 December 2016.
