Recognising local youth achievements

Mildura Rural City Council is once again looking to celebrate the amazing young people in our region, with nominations now open for the 2016 Youth Awards.

The 2016 Mildura Rural City Council Youth Awards have been established to say thank you to local young people who do their bit to support the many events, programs and people in our region.

“This is a great opportunity for people to publicly recognise the real contribution that our teenagers and young adults make to our communities,” said Community Wellbeing and Services Councillor Sharyon Peart.  “We have so many talented and dedicated under 25’s supporting us.

“Sometimes having someone just say thank you can make a real difference in a young person’s life and give them the determination to go even further.”

As in past years, there are four categories and nominations are open to people aged from 12 to 25 years who live, work, volunteer or study in Mildura Rural City Council’s boundaries.

“There are awards this year for both individuals and groups,” Cr Peart said.  “We have some very dedicated young people in our town who have commitments that many adults would struggle to manage day-in and day-out; but they do so without complaint and with care and class.”

The categories this year are:

  • Youth Artist Award (individual or group) – aimed at recognising a young person or group, who has demonstrated initiative, innovation and made a positive community contribution through drama, visual arts, performing arts, technical support, debating, literacy pursuits or music.
  • Youth Volunteer Award - Recognises a young person who has given up his/her valuable time and effort for the benefit of a community organisation or the community more generally.
  • Youth Group Award - Recognises a group of young people who have shown outstanding dedication through their involvement or participation in the community and have made a significant difference.
  • Youth Carer Award - Recognises a young person who is the primary carer for a family member, relative or friend with a disability, mental illness or chronic condition

“There are cash prizes for the winners, who will be announced in April next year,” Cr Peart explained.  “Full criteria and nomination forms are available from Council’s Youth Services and staff will be more than happy to help you with any questions about the process.

“If you know a young person who deserves a little recognition for the contribution they’re making to our local community, someone who is caring for a family member, or even a group who are making a difference to the lives of others, please consider nominating them.”

Nominations are open now and close at 5pm on Friday 19 February 2016.
