Roundabout for Fourteenth Street and Karadoc Avenue intersection
Published on 15 October 2015
Work will start on construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Fourteenth Street and Karadoc Avenue next week.
The busy Irymple intersection will be closed to traffic for approximately two months, from Monday 19 October to Sunday 20 December, weather permitting.
Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Greg Brown said Mildura Rural City Council received $541,991 through the Federal Government’s Black Spot Programme for the project.
“This intersection has seen a number of accidents over the years, including two serious injury crashes in 2013,” Cr Brown said.
“A vehicle crash at a traditional cross intersection has high impact forces that can cause serious injuries to passengers. Constructing a roundabout at the intersection will slow traffic and reduces the chance of a serious crash by ninety percent.”
As well as calming traffic at the intersection, the new roundabout has been designed with turning capacity for B Double trucks.
Council contractors will complete the intersection upgrade works which involve excavation, drainage and electrical works, pavement construction, concreting, asphalting, line marking and signage installation.
Lower Murray Water will also use the opportunity to relocate some underground assets in the area whilst the intersection is closed.
Cr Brown said traffic control and detour signage would be in place to notify motorists that the intersection will be closed for the duration of the works. He encouraged drivers who used the intersection as part of their regular commute or drive to plan ahead to use an alternative route.
“We are anticipating that the roundabout will take about two months to construct and the intersection will have to be closed for the entire time, to ensure the safety of the contractors working on site.
“If everything goes to plan and the weather is kind to us then motorists will hopefully be able to use the new roundabout from Monday 21 December.”
