Second Mildura Pride Project community film screening
Published on 31 March 2016
After the resounding success of their first movie night, Mildura Rural City Council’s Mildura Pride Project is hosting a screening of the Australian film Holding the Man.
Based on the memoir and stage play of the same name, Holding the Man is the story of Tim Conigrave and his partner John Caleo and looks at their fifteen year relationship spanning the mid-1970’s and through to the early 1990’s.
Community Development and Safety portfolio Councillor Ali Cupper said the screening of Holding the Man is another great way to get people talking about the issues facing Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) couples every day.
“As a Council we were very proud to adopt the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) Inclusion Plan earlier this year, which aims to ensure this sometimes isolated group of residents, have a voice in our region,” Cr Cupper said.
“The Mildura Pride group are continuing to make sure this plan produces real outcomes for our whole community. Opening up discussion, bringing people together and creating a welcoming, non-judgemental environment, should be base level indicators of what makes a great inclusive community. We need to strive to do more than just say we’re inclusive - we need to show it.”
The screening of the movie is a self-funded project, with a minimum of 50 tickets needing to be pre-sold before the event will go ahead.
“Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online,” Cr Cupper said. “The screening is scheduled for 6:45pm on Wednesday 13 April but we need to have confirmed minimum numbers by Wednesday 6 April for the event to go ahead.”
Bookings can be made online at www.tugg.com/events/93981 and more information about the screening is available from Mildura Pride Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mildurapride
