Next month will see Mildura Arts Centre open the fascinating exhibition, Women of the River Country, showcasing the journeys of 19 unique women who have played a vital role in shaping our mighty river country.

This national exhibition was developed by volunteers and staff of the Mannum Dock Museum.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said the exhibition will feature the stories of women from the 1800s to the present day.

“The profiled women all have a connection to the river and their intriguing lives will be a drawcard for visitors to the exhibition,” Cr Modica said.

Hattie Schell and Hattie Sexton Schell, the wives of William Chaffey, are included in this remarkable exhibition as well as early pioneers and Aboriginal singer/songwriter Ruby Hunter.

Mildura Arts Centre is hosting a pre-exhibition talk and discussion on Monday, 8 May and invite people to come along who can identify women in towns across Sunraysia, including Buronga, Dareton and Gol Gol, who have contributed significantly to the region and have achieved greatness in their lives.

“This is a great opportunity to come down to the Mildura Arts Centre and have a yarn about the unique women from our region and share stories about their achievements,” Cr Modica said.

These unique profiles will be featured in a future exhibition at Mildura Arts Centre and Wentworth.
