Street trade trial for Mildura’s Langtree Mall
Published on 15 May 2015
Mildura Rural City Council is inviting street traders to operate in Langtree Mall in a bid to help activate the city’s central business district.
Expressions of Interest for a trial period of up to six months, open today, with commercial businesses, not-for-profit groups and schools eligible to apply.
Up to three Street Trader permits may be issued for the trial, with operators required to set up trade in time for the culmination of the Langtree Mall 7 Day Makeover on June 7.
Mayor Glenn Milne said the introduction of street traders would complement the Langtree Mall 7 Day Makeover initiative, which is currently underway.
“The objective of the makeover and Mall Street Trader trial is to increase activity and vibrancy in the Mall,” he said.
“If we can draw more people in to this space it will benefit the entire community, both socially and economically.”
Creative Communities Director David Engwicht, who will facilitate the 7 Day Makeover when it gets underway next month echoed the mayor’s sentiments.
“In my experience when new traders and operators have set up within an existing retail space it has had a positive flow-on effect for whole precinct,” he said.
“It’s really refreshing that the Council is willing to trial street traders in the Langtree Mall. This is an exciting opportunity that will help inject extra energy in to the Langtree Mall, adding to its atmosphere and appeal as a public space and retail precinct.”
Cr Milne encouraged potential street traders to make the most of the opportunity on offer, saying there was scope for a myriad of ideas that could be considered.
“All applications will be considered on their merit. We are looking for traders that will compliment, and not be in direct competition with the existing businesses in the Mall.”
Expression of Interests for Temporary Street Traders in Mildura’s Langtree Mall close on Thursday 28 May. EOI documents are available online at www.mildura.vic.gov.au
