Local artists and budding designers will have the chance to see their creativity immortalised as part of an innovative art competition with a difference.

Entries are now open for designs to feature on a mobile outdoor table tennis table which will be set up in Mildura’s Langtree Mall during the upcoming 7 Day Makeover.

The table tennis table, which is constructed of steel and powder coated in white paint, provides a unique blank canvas for a local artist or designer to stamp their mark on.

Mayor Glenn Milne encouraged locals to enter the competition by submitting their proposed designs.

“This table tennis table will be set up in the Mall and be free for anyone to use. Not only will it provide people with another focal point and purpose to visit the Mall, it will also act as a piece of public art for everyone to appreciate,” Cr Milne said.

Council staff constructed two table tennis tables using materials donated by the Rotary Club of Mildura Deakin, to be part of the Resources bank for the Langtree Mall 7 Day Makeover.  One table will feature the Rotary Club of Mildura Deakin’s emblem and the other will sport the design of the winning artist’s entry.

Running from June 1 to 7, the Langtree Mall 7 Day Makeover will be led by placemaking expert David Engwicht, from Creative Communities.

“Setting up free, mobile table tennis tables is one of the many creative ideas that local people have come up with to help activate the Mall,” David said.

“I am really excited at the innovation and enthusiasm the Mildura community has shown for this initiative to date. I can only imagine it is a sign for things to come and anticipate the makeover next month will be a truly transformative occasion, not only for the Langtree Mall, but for the community too.”

To enter the art competition, people just have to submit their designs, using the official entry form before 9am Monday 1 June 2015. Entry forms are available online at www.7day.com.au, on the table tennis table currently on display in the Mall and at the Mildura City Heart office in Eighth Street.

The winning entry will be determined by a panel of judges including David Engwicht, and representatives from Mildura Arts Centre, Mildura City Heart and the arts community. The winning design will be transferred on to the table tennis table during the week of the 7 Day Makeover and unveiled at the makeover celebration event on Sunday 7 June.
