Deakin Avenue near Thirteenth Street is about to receive a major facelift as part of the next phase of the landmark Deakin Avenue Master Plan.

Council will start work this week to establish two new gardens as well as the installation of a new subsurface irrigation system in the median strip, all of which are aimed at beautifying Deakin Avenue between Thirteenth and Hunter Streets.

The works include planting new gardens at both ends of this stretch of Deakin Avenue – at the intersection with both Hunter Street and Thirteenth Street.

Existing gardens in the centre of the median meanwhile will be removed, making way for the new irrigation system, which will not only improve grass cover, but allow for the removal of existing pop-up sprinklers, which often spray onto the roadway.

No pruning of existing trees, or tree removal, will be undertaken during these works.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said this month's works would significantly improve the appearance of this section of Deakin Avenue.

"These works will provide a major boost to the aesthetics of this stretch of Deakin Avenue as well as being consistent with the existing improvements that have already been made as part of the ongoing Deakin Avenue Master Plan,” Cr Cirillo said.

“When finished, these works will complete the planned landscaping works between Thirteenth and Fourteenth Streets outlined in the Deakin Avenue Master Plan.”

Council expects the works to be completed by the end of May.

The Deakin Avenue Master Plan is a staged revitalisation of Mildura’s main thoroughfare which has been planned and undertaken in consultation with a host of community groups including Greening Mildura, Mildura Historical Society and the Chaffey Trail Reference Group.
