Understanding challenging behaviours to support those with autism

Published on 23 October 2019

Parents or guardians of children on the autism spectrum will learn how to understand challenging behaviours in a bid to better support their child at two free workshops in Mildura next month.

Challenging Behaviours will provide a chance to learn from and speak to clinical psychologist Kate French, who has been working in the therapy space with autistic individuals and families for 15 years.

Kate will speak at both workshops which will be held on the following dates:

Morning session
Thursday 14 November
6pm – 9pm
76 Deakin Avenue

Evening session
Wednesday 20 November
9.30am – 12.30pm
Aero Ovals Pavilion
Eleventh Street West

Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equity Helen Healy said the two free workshops were a valuable opportunity for parents and guardians of children on the autism spectrum to learn more about their child’s behaviour and any steps they can take in response.

“Experts tell us that behaviour is a function of communication, meaning the greater understanding parents can take from their child’s behaviour, the better they can support their needs,” Cr Healy said.

“Next month’s two free workshops are designed to help parents understand the ‘why’ behind their child’s behaviour and learn about different parenting programs and methods that can have a positive impact on their child’s behaviour.”

Cr Healy said the workshops were designed to be interactive, meaning parents will be able to speak directly to a specialist clinical psychologist about any specific queries or concerns they may have.

“Having Kate and all her specialist experience in this field at both workshops will be invaluable and I’d encourage any parent or guardian of a child or teen on the autism spectrum to take advantage of this opportunity,” she said.

Morning tea and a light supper will be supplied, however attendees are asked to provide any dietary requirements when they book.

People wishing to attend either workshop are asked to contact Project Officer Jeni Snadden on (03) 5018 8100 or jeni.snadden@mildura.vic.gov.au
