Using art to communicate our Reconciliation Action Plan

Published on 05 May 2017

There’s still time left for applications from Aboriginal artists interested in submitting artwork reflecting Council’s new Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

Council last month put out the call for artists to submit applications to create an artwork that relates to the vision of our new RAP.

Council’s RAP sets out the organisation’s commitment to strengthening relationships with the Aboriginal community through mutual respect, inclusiveness, equity and cultural awareness, and is supported by the Aboriginal Action Committee.

Council’s vision for reconciliation is ‘walking and talking together to create a respectful community that is inclusive and built upon shared understanding’.

It’s envisaged the artwork will relate thematically with the vision of the RAP as well as reflecting the cultural landscape of the region.

Successful applicants will have their artwork exhibited within Mildura Rural City Council’s Madden Avenue and Deakin Avenue Service Centres as well as possibly reproduced in the new 2017-2020 RAP.

Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Ali Cupper encouraged local Aboriginal artists to become involved.

“This is an exciting opportunity for artists to create works which reflect and communicate the vitally important goals and components of our RAP to the broader community,” Cr Cupper said.

“It will also provide another opportunity for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents to play a role in creating understanding, equity and cultural awareness in our community.”

Applicants must illustrate their understanding of the RAP’s vision and demonstrate artistic ability. A maximum of six recent images can be provided demonstrating an ability to deliver successful public art. A curriculum vitae no longer than two pages must also be provided, covering the applicant’s skills, experience and/or qualifications.

Applications must be submitted by 4pm on Monday, 15 May.
