Victorian Councils receive financial assistance grant prepayment

Published on 08 June 2017

In a decision by the Commonwealth Government, Mildura Rural City Council has received 50 per cent of its allocation of the Victorian Grants Commission financial assistance grant in the 2016/17 Financial Year, instead of the complete grant in the 2017/18 Financial Year as anticipated.

The Victorian Grants Commission allocates financial assistance grants to support councils in delivering services to their communities. These funds are provided annually by the Commonwealth Government and comprise general purpose grants and local roads grants.

Mildura Rural City Council Mayor Glenn Milne said this decision was made without consultation with Councils.

“This decision was outside our control and not something we could anticipate,” he said.

“These grants form an important part of Council’s service provision and receiving half of the allocation this Financial Year will have no impact on our services or operations,” Cr Milne said.

While receiving 50 per cent of Council’s allocated funding will have no effect on its performance and position, it will show an inflated positive result in 2016/17 financial reports and as a consequence, an inflated negative result for 2017/18 reports.
