Construction has started on the $400,000 Ouyen Transfer Station, promising Ouyen residents more options and convenience when disposing of their waste.

The new facility will not only allow residents to dispose of recyclable items easier, but divert more waste from landfill.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said that once completed, the transfer station will provide residents with the option of dropping off all recycling first before proceeding to dispose of their remaining waste at the landfill.

"This will allow easier flow of waste disposal and help encourage residents to dispose of any recyclable items first,” Cr Cirillo said.

“This in turn will not only reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, but possibly save residents money as they’ll be minimising the amount of waste they’ll need to pay to dispose of,” Cr Cirillo said.

He said the transfer station would add to Council’s existing waste management services in Ouyen.

“By adding a transfer station to our existing facilities at the Ouyen Landfill, we’re making it even easier for residents in the area to recycle,” Cr Cirillo said.

Construction is expected to take seven weeks and residents are reminded to take care when using the landfill during construction and to follow instructions from landfill staff.
