CCTV
Mildura Rural City Council owns and operates a public closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, which encompasses Mildura’s riverfront precinct and areas of Mildura and Red Cliffs CBD.
CCTV footage is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week by Victoria Police, and is not accessible to unauthorised personnel.
These cameras are a valuable tool, providing reassurance to the community that these locations are being monitored, as well as acting as a deterrent to would-be criminals.
Council has a Corporate CCTV system which monitors facilities and public spaces such as Council offices, pools, libraries, performing art centres and waste management facilities.
Benefits of CCTV
- Provide ‘eyes on the street’ when police patrols are not present
- Deter potential offenders from committing crime
- Identify crime as it occurs, allowing for a prompt police response
- Assist with identification and prosecution after an incident has occurred
- Improved community confidence and perceptions of safety in areas covered by the CCTV network
Mildura Council has established a CCTV Steering Committee, which meets to monitor the operation and effectiveness of the program and identify opportunities to add new cameras to the network.
This provides an independent and continuous review mechanism allowing the group, which includes members of Mildura Police, to determine if there is need for more CCTV and to ensure the CCTV system is managed appropriately.
