Background
Mildura Rural City Council (MRCC) commissioned specialist consultants Context Pty Ltd to undertake Stage 1 of the study which involves a review of Mildura’s Heritage Assets. Context prepared the Mildura Heritage Study Stage 1, including a review of the City & Shire of Mildura Conservation Study (Andrew C Ward June 1988).
Referred to as the Mildura Heritage Study - Part B, the study covers the northern half of the municipality. Stage 1 of the project involved preparation of a Thematic Environmental History and the identification of all places of potential cultural significance across the study area.
The project was undertaken to be consistent with Heritage Victoria requirements as contained within the brief to identify, assess and document post-contact places of cultural significance within the municipality and to make recommendations for their future conservation. A heritage study is usually divided into two stages. Heritage Victoria often refers to a separate Stage 3, which is the implementation of the heritage study recommendations.
Stage 1 involved the preparation of a Thematic Environmental History and the identification of all places of potential cultural significance across the study area. Stage 2 involves the detailed assessment of significance and documentation of those places that were identified to be of potential cultural significance in the Stage 1 survey. Stage 2 commenced July 2022.
A project Reference Group for Stage 1 was established. Membership of the Reference Group comprised representatives from Mildura and each of the townships around Mildura, including Merbein, Millewa and Red Cliffs historical societies, as well as the Registered Aboriginal Party for the local area, the First People of the Millewa-Mallee Aboriginal Corporation. A new Reference Group will be convened at the commencement of Stage 2.
