Mildura Public Open Space Strategy 2021

Current Status

Mildura Public Open Space Strategy (27 January 2021), was adopted at the Ordinary Meeting of Council held 28 April 2021.

Community Consultation

Throughout the two-round consultation process we encouraged those with an interest in the future of public open space in the municipality, to tell us what they liked about public open space throughout the municipality, and what needed improvement.

In Round 1 Consultation we gathered information from the community and other key interested stakeholders using an online survey (closed 30 August 2020) and online workshops (held 13 August 2020).  We heard about how you visit Council’s parks and open spaces, how you use these spaces, how often you visit and what you want to see in the future. Some of the uses included exercise, walking the dog, visiting playgrounds, socialising with friends and simply relaxing in a park.

Round 1 feedback received from the community was used by Council and consultants Tredwell Management to prepare the recently exhibited draft strategy.

Round 2 consultation (now closed) was undertaken via the formal six week exhibition (4 December 2020 to 27 January 2021) of the draft MRCC Public Open Space Strategy, (still available for viewing and download at the bottom of this page).  During this time Council invited formal written public comment on the draft strategy.  Council considered comments received during the formal comment period and prepared a response to comments received.  The recommended Council position on submissions was reported to Council's 28 April 2021 Ordinary Council Meeting.

Draft Mildura Recreation Strategy

If you are interested in the use of Mildura’s open spaces for recreation, you are encouraged to view the Mildura Recreation Strategy whichestablishes the strategic direction for recreation facility provision for the next ten years.

Recreation includes organised sports and games like football and cricket, as well as non-organised recreational activities such as jogging and cycling.

Background

Six months ago Council engaged Tredwell Management Services to assist with updating the Mildura Rural City Council Public Open Space Strategy. This work will finalise the partly completed review of Council’s existing Public Open Space Strategy Plan 2004. (Link below)

Mildura Rural City Council recognises that high-quality public open space plays an important part in the community’s overall health and wellbeing and includes publicly accessible parks, reserves and natural areas managed by Council for the purpose of recreation, conservation, and amenity or landscape enhancement.

The updated strategy will guide Council’s provision and future management of public open space and will contribute to the achievement of the community vision to be ‘the most liveable, people-friendly community in Australia’.

The strategy aims to create a diverse and integrated network of public open space for both recreation and the conservation of natural and cultural environments to meet the use and amenity needs of MRCC residents and visitors alike.

For the purpose of this project, the term ‘public open space’ is defined as “Publicly accessible parks, reserves and natural areas that are managed by Council for the purposes of public recreation, conservation, amenity or landscape enhancement”.

Project Timeline

The Mildura Public Open Space Strategy will be prepared across the second half of 2020, with a final document for council adoption in early 2021.
