Proposed Commercial Waste fee changes

Mildura Rural City Council is proposing to increase the fees associated with the disposal of commercial waste at the Mildura Landfill for the 2024/25 financial year.

To combat exponentially rising clean fill and EPA levy costs associated with the disposal and management of waste, which is costing our community millions of dollars each year, Council is proposing to increase associated fees to $248 per tonne from 1 July 2024.

This is an increase of $69 a tonne and will only apply to commercial customers accessing the Mildura Landfill tipface.

As it currently stands, 60% of the fees customers pay at the Mildura Landfill goes to the EPA, 10% is GST and 30% goes to Council to cover operating costs. Of this 30%, we need to pay for staff costs to operate the landfill, compliance and regulatory costs, contractor costs and landfill plant and equipment among other expenses.

The total gate fee income Council currently receives doesn’t cover the total levy cost we are required by law to pay, leading to the proposed increase being necessary.

To negate the impacts of the fee increase, commercial waste operators are encouraged to source alternative ways to dispose of this waste. This includes utilising the Buronga Landfill in the Wentworth Shire. A full list of the Buronga Landfill fees can be found at www.wentworth.nsw.gov.au/health-environment/waste-management/waste-fees/
